An defense minister has stated that the Ministry of Defence is actively investigating the possible threats associated with Chinese vehicles, and personnel have been instructed to refrain from talking about secret matters in any vehicles.
Security Guidance for Defence Personnel
In a recently aired appearance on LBC, Luke Pollard commented on reports that Ministry of Defence officials have been told not to discuss classified information while riding in China-made vehicles.
The minister said that the MoD is “examining” cars from China within its fleets, but emphasised that safety is a issue in every modern vehicles.
We have a fleet of tens of thousands of vehicles in the MoD and those vehicles represent a tiny fraction.
But regardless of if you’re driving a vehicle from China or a car from another country, our instruction to our people is not to plug MoD devices into their car, not to have conversations at a secret level in any vehicle, due to the growing threats of surveillance that are present in all vehicle, to restrict those secret talks in secure locations. This is a prudent and reasonable thing for everyone worried about security.
When it was suggested that it would be wise for the MoD to cease using all cars from China, the minister replied: That is exactly what we are looking into at the present time.”
Broader Defence Context
This announcement comes as claims from Scandinavian countries have alerted the UK to the presence of multi-purpose kill switches in Chinese-made electric buses, which could enable the Chinese government to switch off public transport and cause chaos to public transit.
Additionally, a Russia spy ship was reportedly shining laser beams at Royal Air Force aircrew, labeled a “extremely risky” act by government representatives.
The broader defence environment highlights the significance of strong measures and vigilance in all areas of government activities, including vehicle usage to discussions practices.
