Harvard ex-president Summers Steps Down from OpenAI Board
One-time economic leader the Harvard professor is exiting the board at the ChatGPT creator, just several days after a series of emails between him and deceased financier Jeffrey Epstein became publicly available.
He stated in a statement that he was "grateful for the opportunity to have served, optimistic about the potential of the organization, and anticipate observing their development".
The former Harvard president, who previously presided over Harvard University, announced on earlier this week that he would be stepping back from public responsibilities due to his relationship with the convicted sex offender.
Message Exchange
The recently released emails demonstrated that the economist exchanged messages with Epstein until the 24 hours preceding Epstein's 2019 arrest for alleged sex trafficking of minors.
In a separate statement, the technology organization stated it accepted Summers' determination to resign.
"We value his many contributions and the perspective he offered to the directors," the company stated.
Legislative Background
This news arrives after both chambers of Congress decided on recently to endorse a legislation that would compel the federal prosecutors to make public its documents on Jeffrey Epstein.
The measure will subsequently proceed to the administration of President Trump for signature. The President has stated he plans to approve the legislation, after changing his position on the matter following pushback from his supporters.
Correspondence Findings
A collection of Epstein-related messages made public by the legislative panel last week mentioned several well-known personalities in the Epstein's previous network, without implying any illegal behavior by those figures.
The emails showed that the professor and Epstein often met for meals, with Epstein often attempting to introduce the official to influential world leaders.
Personal Response
After the messages were shared with the general audience, the former official expressed he took "full responsibility for my poor choice to persist in interacting with Mr Epstein".
He further stated that he hoped "to reestablish confidence and mend bonds with the individuals most important to me".
Previous Positions
The professor held senior posts under Democratic administrations; serving as Treasury chief under President Clinton, and as director of the economic advisory body under the former leader.
He headed the university from five years and is still a faculty member there. When announcing his withdrawal from public roles previously on this week, he indicated he would persist with his academic responsibilities.
Other Impacts
Following Summers' statement on Monday, the Center for American Progress, a progressive research organization in the capital where Summers was a prominent member, announced that the economist was not affiliated with the organization.
