Three police officers perished and at least 15 additional individuals were hurt in an apparently deliberate gas explosion at a farmhouse in the northern part of Italy.

Event Timeline

The explosion was triggered as law enforcement and fire personnel went into the property near the Verona region to execute an eviction order for a brother and sister trio aged in their 50s and 60s.

Each of the three victims who died were members of the Italian military police.

Legal Proceedings

Two individuals got detained at the scene and a third person who escaped after the incident was apprehended soon after. The trio have been admitted to hospital.

The blast could be noticed approximately 5 kilometers away and footage from the scene displayed the structure left as a mass of wreckage.

“This moment calls for sorrow,” commented Interior Minister the Interior Minister, who mentioned that attempts had been made to remove the brother and sister trio in the past.

Property Situation

The president of the region of Veneto, the regional head, said the residence was under an court order due to debts accrued by the property owners.

Conflict resolution experts had been assigned to speak to the family members who had barricaded themselves into the house. When the officers came just after 03:00 (01:00 GMT), investigators suspect one of the residents set off the explosion.

“Upon entering the house, we were confronted with an act of absolute madness,” provincial police commander the police commander informed news outlets.

A gas canister had been ignited, and the detonation precisely impacted our personnel,” he explained.

Petrol bombs were also found at the residence, the interior minister stated.

Injuries and Destruction

The wounded by the incident included 11 other members of the military police as well as three officers of the state police and a fire services member.

According to the Verona prosecutor, the farmhouse was in a poor condition and had was without power.

The prosecutor was convinced the explosion had occurred on a story above the access point and informed journalists it was a “premeditated and voluntary homicide”. Moments before the incident, he said personnel had “detected a whistling noise, probably the gas canisters being turned on”.

Neighbor Statements

“All of us understood the scenario was critical,” nearby inhabitants stated to reporters, mentioning that the three had earlier warned to “detonate the property” rather than vacate the property.

“The incident exacted a ‘dreadful, extremely sad and dramatic price’.”

Minister of Defence Minister Crosetto united with other government officials in honoring the three officers who had died in the line of duty.
