Bluefin Tuna Fetches Record Sum of $3.2 million at Japanese Capital New Year Sale
A bulky bluefin tuna caused a stir at the Toyosu fish market this Monday, garnering a record-breaking bid of 510.3 million yen ($3.2 million; £2.4m) during the venue's first auction of the year.
The top offer for the 243-kilogram fish was submitted by the operator of a popular sushi chain, which runs outlets domestically and overseas.
"An inaugural tuna heralds a prosperous start," commented the entrepreneur, a familiar bidder at the yearly first sale.
Known as the King of Tuna, this entrepreneur is noted for making high bids for bluefin tuna at these auspicious January auctions.
Auction Surprise and Historic Precedent
After the auction, the winner admitted to journalists that he was "taken aback at the winning bid," stating, "I expected we would be able to buy it a little for less, but the price soared in no time."
This most recent acquisition tops his previous historic purchases:
- He bid 56.5 million yen back in 2012.
- He paid 155 million yen the following year.
- In 2019, he acquired a tuna for 333.6 million yen ($2.1 million).
Despite previously saying that he thought he "bid too high," he has now managed to shatter his personal record another time.
An Annual Spectacle of High Prices
The inaugural auction at the Toyosu fish market is traditionally associated with sky-high prices. Last year, the first tuna was bought for 207 million yen by a separate food company, which announced the fish would be available at its restaurants nationwide.
The high-energy activity at the fish market during these early morning auctions has evolved into a must-see event in Tokyo. Monday's auction, which began around 05:00 local time, was no exception.
Immediate Consumption
The record-priced tuna was promptly prepared for diners at the bidder's sushi chains shortly after the auction concluded.
"I sense like I've begun the year in a auspicious way after tasting something so fortune-bringing as the year gets underway," shared one satisfied patron.
