Aaron Rai Secures Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship in Thrilling Play-Off Showdown Against Tommy Fleetwood

The 30-year-old golfer demonstrated remarkable composure to claim the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship on the final day, defeating Tommy Fleetwood in a dramatic play-off after a rollercoaster last day of competition.

The Englishman sank a crucial birdie putt from around eight feet to seal the win, repeating his sole prior Rolex Series success at the 2020 Scottish Open, which was likewise a play-off victory over Fleetwood.

Sunday's Play Excitement

Rai started the final round with a one-shot advantage over countryman Fleetwood and Danish golfer Nicolai Højgaard. He finished with a total score of 263 after a topsy-turvy, 67 final round that included seven birdies and a pair of bogeys.

Fleetwood edged one shot clear with the 16th and 17th remaining after a birdie on the 16th, but Rai pulled level again on the 17th and then failed to convert a ten-foot birdie attempt to win outright on the last hole.

Playoff Decider

That led to a playoff at the Yas Links course where the eventual winner prevailed to claim the title and $1.5 million (£1.13m) in prize money.

{“Tommy is a world-class player and an even better individual. To play with him the last two days was really special,” stated Rai, the current 30th-ranked player globally. “You’re so focused on your game and maintaining focus, it’s difficult to describe at the present how it feels. It is amazing to be holding the trophy.”

Notable Performances

Rory McIlroy left himself a bit too far to do, finishing one shot behind in a tie for third with Højgaard, after a spectacular 10-under closing round of 62. It was his lowest-ever round on the DP World Tour, including eight birdie putts and one eagle.

The Danish golfer carded six birdies of his as well, but his hopes of leading the leaderboard were dented by a dropped shot on the twelfth. England’s Richard Mansell hit an superb final-round 63 to finish tied for fifth with Australian Daniel Hillier.
